Are Rodents Infesting Your Home?

Roof rats, Norway rats, and house mice are the three common rodents that make their way into our homes. While they may look similar to each other, mice are much smaller, and usually live behind our appliances in the kitchen or walls. Rats can grow up to 16 oz and their tails are much thicker and longer. They are both capable of infesting homes in their search for food, water, and shelter.

  • Rats reach sexual maturity at around 3 or 4 months and can give birth to up to 10 pups every month. Mice can give birth to up to 60 pups in a single year. This makes control hard when it first goes unnoticed. A colony of roof rats can go from 8 to 100 in as little as a months' time. Recognizing the warning sign early can help with the extermination process.
  • Rodents carry 21 diseases in their droppings and urine that are transmittable to humans. These pathogens can cause severe illness if proper sanitation does not occur after an infestation.
  • Signs of a rat or mouse infestation include droppings, scratching sounds in the walls and ceiling, and gnaw marks in baseboards, floors, and food containers.
  • An adult mouse can squeeze through an opening as small as a dime. Some rats can get through an opening the size of a quarter.
